In this episode Gerry gets into everything there is to know about contrast training.

Contrast training is a training method that pairs a resisted activity with an unresisted speed movement. The resisted activity helps the athlete exploit post-activation  potentiation (PAP), otherwise known as the phenomenon of high firing rates of muscles immediately after they are contracted at high rates.

Find out how Gerry uses this protocol with his athletes, his recommendations for how to organize your rest time and his favorite contrast training pairings for lower and upper half explosiveness, power and speed.

In this episode, Gerry starts by taking a chance to answer a few questions he has received the past few weeks. One of the questions inspired the topic for this week's episode, relative strength.

What is relative strength? How can you ensure that your weight gain has contributed to increased speed and strength, and how can you decide whether or not you should try to gain muscle mass as an athlete.

This episode will give insight on finding strategies and using testing to give a process on monitoring weight gain and making sure that it is either improving overall speed or not adversely effecting it.

In this episode Gerry takes time to tackle one of the most misunderstood topics of sports performance training: conditioning.

To start the episode he gets to the faulty understanding of what it takes to properly condition athletes and why using "mental toughness," tests can be an ineffective way to prepare athletes. In addition, he explains the mistake of training "speed," but not giving an athlete full recovery, and why you don't have to train long durations at high intensities to be "in-shape," for team sports.

After explaining how we can properly educate and prepare coaches to fully understand the basics of energy systems, this podcast also details the three main energy systems and which are predominantly used in team-sports. Lastly, Gerry details some suggestions on how to train each one practically and effectively.

In this episode, Gerry explains what is wrong with the infatuation with "sport specific," training when it comes to strength training/sports performance and why you should avoid bring your sport, sport implements (bat, stick, ball, skates etc.) into the weight room.

To start, this episode details the distinction between general performance and weight training and sport specific training. Sport specific training involves ONLY what is done either during practice or gameplay of the respective sport.

From there, Gerry explains Yuri Verkhoshansky's Principle of Dynamic Correspondence (otherwise known as "transferability," of training), and how you can best position your strength and speed training to prepare you for your sport.
